Sthirata Kosh (JSK), Jagran Pehel and Jagran
Sakhi organized a one day media sensitization
workshop in Patna on 17th February 2009 on
Population issues. The broad objective of the
workshop was to create a forum for discussion
around population issues and to sensitise and
enhance the skills of journalists to write
more effectively on population related issues.
The workshop was inaugurated by Honorable
Health Minister, Bihar, Mr. Nand Kishore Yadav,
Mr. Sunil Gupta, Director, Jagran Prakashan
Ltd, Ms Shailaja Chandra, Executive Director,
Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh, Regional Editor,
Dainik Jagran Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal,
Editors from Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Regional
Director, PSI (Population Service
International), UNFPA, State Health Society,
Bihar, Janani among others.
The workshop was also attended and supported
by Rashtriya Sahara, Hindustan and other
papers.
Mr. Sunil Gupta, Director Jagran Prakashan
Ltd. in his welcome speech complemented
Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh (JSK) for their
initiative and for understanding that mass
media as an effective means to create a
positive changes in society. Ms Shailaja
Chandra, Executive Director, Jansankhya
Sthirata Kosh (JSK) stated the importance of
this workshop and explained in her
introductory speech about the objectives of
JSK and its establishment.
Mr. Nand Kishor Yadav, Minister for Health,
Government of Bihar highlighted the importance
of media and the need of media sensitization
in his inaugural speech. He spoke about
population scenario of Bihar and briefed the
participants about the initiatives that the
government is taking in health sector
including population stabilization. Dr P.C
Samantray, Programme Coordinator, JSK
explained the increasing need of unmet needs
of contraception. Mr. Shailendra Dixit,
Resident Editor, Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal,
focused on the unbalanced growth of population
as the most serious issue today. He lamented
over poor coverage of these issues which
occasionally or never made it to the front
pages. He stated “Desire for a boy child is
also a reason for a skewed population”.
The workshop was facilitated by Smt. Usha Rai,
Senior Journalist with group activities like,
preparation of a radio talk over declining sex
ratio in the country and increasing trend of
female foeticide. A newsroom drama with three
different stories on population stabilisation,
child marriage and the two child policy was
enacted by the participants. Ms. Rai stated
the importance of the role of media on
advocating against Female foeticides and sex
selection. Media campaigns on declining sex
ratio and discrimination against the girl
child if well orchestrated by print and
electronic media could bring about positive
changes and can make different stakeholders
more accountable.
The workshop was
conducted and coordinated by Ms. Shalini
Shukla, Communication Officer from JSK and Mr.
Anand Madhab, Ms. Bulbuli Mukherjee and Ms.
Rashmi from Pehel.
