(Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare addressing the participants)

Introduction

On the occasion of the World Population Day on 11th and 12th July, 2007, Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh organised a Sensitisation Programme for Youth and Adolescents in which more than 500 youth and adolescents participated. They came from the underserved villages of Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and were identified using the GIS maps on JSK’s website (www.jsk.gov.in) to select the underserved talukas. The aim was to sensitise the participants (age group 16-20 years), who constitute a major part of India’s population to become aware of the issues connected with responsible parenthood. The event was organised in association with key organizations which have a stake or a presence in rural areas and have been working with young people viz Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), National Literacy Mission (NLM) and National Service Scheme (NSS). The programme was supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The venue for the event was Gandhi Darshan, near Rajghat, New Delhi.

The State wise details of the participants are available. Click here to view.

Objectives of the program

  • To familiarize adolescents and youth about issues related to size and growth of Indian population in general and in their own states and districts in particular.

  • To create awareness regarding the impact of population growth on health of women and children and the well-being of the country.

  • To enhance understanding of young people to take responsible decisions regarding population issues, age of marriage, health of the mother which has direct impact on the health of the child and the robustness of future generations.

  • To create awareness about the myths and misconceptions about adolescence and prepare young people to face the challenges of adulthood.

  • To sensitise the young people about life skills including communication and decision–making ability to enable them to make informed choices.

Programme Structure and Highlights

CHETNA a leading NGO facilitated the sessions along with the National Alliance for Young People. They used the opportunity to sensitise the participants about decision-making, negotiation, etc in the context of population stabilisation and its relationship with development. Rights and Gender were the cross cutting issues.

A series of sensitisation sessions on population and health issues were held which included group discussions, role play exercises, interactive games, a theatre workshop, quiz/painting competitions and a magic show with population stabilisation as the theme.
